USE HEART TO BEAT CVD (WORLD HEART DAY 2020)

Image
The COVID-19 pandemic has shone light on the healthcare profession and our responsibilities as individuals towards our health by enforcing the habit of regular hand washing, and so on. But while we're taking up responsibilities for our general health during this pandemic, we need to look after our cardiac health in particular too.

TRADITIONAL MEDICINE VS MODERN MEDICINE.

Image
Source For many years, people–old people especially–have argued that traditional medicine is much more efficient than modern medicine. A lot of them base their arguments on the “fact” that in the olden days when all that was available were herbs and drugs from traditional doctors, people lived longer. They also argue that younger people these days lack the energy and agility of people from older generations.

LOVE OF CRAFTS

Image
Crafts have been lowly recognized and classified as a lesser creative activity than art. Perhaps, the great deal of skill involved makes it less appealing and applaudable compared to art which has to do with innate talent. But then, isn’t craft a type of art? A reproducible art in fact! The ultimate creative tangible output from art. True, many craft activities (producing beautiful functional items) can be clearly distinguished from the fine arts (producing beautiful items for beauty’s sake); however, there seems to be no logical reason to classify a unique piece of pottery, or stained glass, or wood carving or textile as a ‘craft product’ rather than a ‘work of art’. Craft is the work of art itself! The very life of art! Its decorative and functional purposes make it a never-to-do-without for us.

GENOMIC BANKING IN AFRICA

Image
Source Some two hundred thousand years ago, Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis migrated throughout and from Africa to other regions. Scientists deduced this phenomenon with the help of genetic evidence. It was called the “Out of Africa” theory (OOA) [1]. Humans then evolved into Homo sapiens, and along the way interacted with various environments, climates and food and thus developed genetic changes [2]. But how significant are these changes? Well, that’s what genomic research is all about.

SHALAYE 101

Image
In today’s world of increasing internet use, with everything happening online, the average Nigerian youth or internet user’s mind wrestles one particular thought throughout the day; to shalaye or not to shalaye. With so much time being spent on social media engaging with all sorts of contents and individuals, you’re almost forced to lose this battle every single day. And once you do, you go on to join the community of people like you, the Shalaye FC. Now you might be wondering what shalaye is and why I’m going on about it.

WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE YOUR EMOTIONAL HEALTH SERIOUSLY.

Image
Do you brush your teeth everyday? Yes right? You have known to do this since you were 5. And you have your bath everyday too right? Your elementary science teacher said it constituted personal hygiene. She also said to wash your hands regularly with soap and water if you didn't want to run the risk of getting infected by germs and falling ill. You fell ill anyway. But when you did, your parents took care of you. They knew what to do without necessarily calling on the family doctor or taking you to the primary health care center just close to your house. Even when you fell from a tree and broke your knee and sustained a bruise from butting off a bicycle, they knew what to do.

Especially the hot, spicy, delicious, party jollof rice !

WORLD SUICIDE DAY 2020

Image
Close to 800,000 people die to suicide every year¹ and nearly 3,000 people on average daily, that’s not to mention the number of attempted suicides which is twice as much as the successful ones. ³That means that one person takes his or her life every 40 seconds worldwide. ¹,²Suicide is known to be the second leading cause of death all over the world for youths aged 15-29 years. ¹,²The World Health Organisation (WHO) revealed that Nigeria had the highest suicide rate among African countries in 2016 with over 17,000 lives lost to suicide².

LIFE AFTER COVID-19.

Image
Source The past six to seven months have indeed been an unforgettable period in the lives of people all over the world with a lot of changes and “adaptations” taking place. At first it was the lockdown and compulsory house arrest and for most people, that brought the reality of the tiny virus straight up their faces. Then, working and studying from home (which previously must have sounded ridiculous) became the new normal because businesses, organizations and corporate bodies had to adjust their systems to allow social distancing in order to quell the spread of the disease. Even religious organizations had to look for a way of making things work from home.
