THE LAB COAT WITH STYLE

Sometimes being a medical student makes us lazy about fashion and style. Forgetting that apart from representing the medical profession by knowing all we need to know to be able to provide best healthcare experience for our patients, we also need to look good. Beneath that lab coat, we also need to serve them with style. I’ll be sharing some tips in the next few paragraphs on how we can be medical students and still slay.

Firstly and personally I believe the beginning of an error in your style is wearing squeezed looking wears. Once you wear your shirts or lab coats without ironing, you’ve committed a huge fashion offence. Most times we rush out to class so we make that 75% attendance in haematology or just so you avoid providing a letter from KSO, ‘Our Honorable HOD’ because you came late to lab posting. At the end of the day we end up looking rough solely because we needed to be early. How do we solve this problem? My advice, iron all wears that need ironing before taking your bath, so if you’re running late you will still end up looking fresh when you open the door to the seminar room and LIC- the LECTURER IS IN CLASS.

The second part is what we are actually wearing. The basic fashion rules; avoid wearing pattern on pattern, match solid color wears with beautiful pattern or stripe wears. For guys, you can wear solid colored shirts with exquisitely patterned or striped tie or the other way round. For ladies, I just love an appearance in soft crepe or chiffon shirt with appropriate matching skirt or pants trousers either plain or patterned depending on what your shirt looks like. Definitely so sleek! Avoid t-shirts, remember it’s unprofessional and we’re training to be professionals. Unlike charges should repel. For native wears, you can wear it any day of the week as long as you wear it completely i.e. wear buba with fila and your dressing is simply a corporate one.

Thirdly, accessories complement our dressing. When you wear watches, you look untouchable especially if it’s a designer watch. Learn to complement your dressing with accessories in order for your dressing to look complete. Bags, jewelries etc. The shoes you wear should totally match the clothes you’re wearing. I think Ladies do well when it comes to shoes but Guys also don’t carry last when they decide to slay with them double monk straps or them rouges boots. Another key accessory though it’s not visible is the perfume you wear. There’s this common saying that you’re never fully dressed without a nice scent. When we wear nice perfumes, it’s builds around us this wall of confidence, a dose of daily inspiration “at least I smell nice.”

Lastly, the way we dress signifies the way we want to be addressed. When you dress nice, it’s a form of pitching the type of person you are and what you do to the public. As much as we preach against it, people do judge a book by its cover. And you’ll concur that most good books do have a nice cover. So cheers; to being a medical student and wearing the lab coat with style.
