SOCIAL DISTANCING VS DISTANCING IN RELATIONSHIPS.

It is no longer news that the new normal---quarantine, social distancing and health hypervigilance as a result of the trending corona virus pandemic has changed a lot of things about our lifestyle. The change in lifestyle began during the first week of the pandemic here in Nigeria, before we knew how bad the pandemic would get, when we were given a set of rules to follow:

Avoid touching your face, a very hard habit to develop
Keep appropriate social distance, we accepted it. After all, it would only be for a while
Practice good hand washing, a much needed change. Whew!
Be especially careful with the elderly or immunocompromised patients, fair enough.
Then we began to feel it in our  romantic relationships as well. I’ll give you a personal example: Before now, I had plans of taking my family to JJT park to celebrate my first child's birthday on April 4th, but with the  news of the first covid-19 positive case, plans began to change as regards the birthday outing because my family became worried  and we began to wonder whether or not the outing would still be a reality, if the place would be safe or not. However, the Federal government came to the rescue when it declared total lockdown on March 23rd. Thus, our outing became a dream not come true. As if that was not enough, my family started to get worried whenever I left for work every morning. As a medical personnel, I constantly get exposed to COVID-19 patients in spite of strict safety measures observed at work. This placed undue worry on my wife, so I constantly had to reassure her that everything was fine. “I’m fine! Don’t worry,” has become my mantra at home. Prior to this, hugging had become a no no thing in my house.
That’s for married couples. Now let’s look at the case of a boyfriend and girlfriend during this period. Some ladies are using the total lockdown as an excuse to stay away from their lovers, although they stay at a distance and demand for data subscription has increased drastically, which posed harm to the boyfriend account or pocket eventually leading to "business without profit."
In conclusion, social distancing, lockdown and COVID-19 has posed fear and created distance in some relationships and marriages.
